The Federal Heights Fire Department was formed in 1942 and proudly protects 12,065 people living in an area of 2 square miles in the Denver Metropolitan region. We operate out of one station that protects a primarily residential area. Our department is a public department whose members are a combination of paid and volunteer.
In 1990 the department was chosen by the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) as the recipent of their FIRE PREVENTER OF THE YEAR award. This award was a result of the 'Free Smoke Detector' program which we have operated continuously since 1987. In 1989 this program resulted in 100% of our residences being equipped with smoke detectors.
The department was profiled in a cover article in the January 1996 issue of American Fire Journal magazine.
Our dalmation mascot, BACKDRAFT, was featured on the front cover of the 1997 Seagrave Fire Apparatus calendar which was distributed worldwide. Backdraft was an important part of our public relations and public education programs and lived at the fire station until her death in 2006.
The Federal Heights Fire Department achieved an Insurance Services Office, Inc. (ISO) Classification Rating of 2. On September 1, 1999, our ISO classification was improved from Class 3 to Class 2. Many insurance companies use the ISO rating to determine the insurance ratings for businesses and residences within the community. Since there are currently no ISO class 1 fire departments in Colorado, our members are very proud to know that we are able to serve our community with the highest ISO rating in the state. For more information about ISO please go to ISO.
The Federal Heights Community Emergency Response Training (CERT) program began in 2003 with a $9,600 grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Federal Heights joined forces with the Adams County Office of Emergency Management, and other communities within Adams County, to form Adams CERT as a countywide effort to educate our citizens in self-sufficiency during disaster situations.
